When you were planning your lifestyle writing business, did you ever dream about having the money to take exotic vacations? Perhaps lazing on a white sandy beach, having a waiter bringing you icy fruit drinks served in coconut shells? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to tour the vineyards of France, tasting the grand cru wines and enjoying the beautiful scenery, ideal weather and delicious food?
Whether your dreams about travel include cruising on the high seas, climbing the highest mountain, visiting the great cities or enjoying the quiet of the countryside, if you want to travel - and get paid for it - you should think about adding “travel writer” to your repertoire.
Why? Because you can travel and get paid for it!
Now to get the really plum assignments, normally you need experience, several articles with your byline published in regional or national papers or magazines. (That’s not always the case, as I share at least 3 “secret” methods with our students in the Writer’s Business Academy.)
But in the meantime, what types of trips can you take as a travel writer? Cruises, trips to specialty bed and breakfast inns, wine tasting trips to vineyards in the U.S., France and Italy, trips to the Caribbean and more.
There are two main kinds of trips where some - if not all - of your expenses will be paid. Called Press Trips or Fam Trips, they are sponsored by th publicity departments or owners of the establishments. The idea is to get the word out about these fabulous travel destinations - and ideally, to have an article published in a national magazine or newspaper.
Here are a few offers I receved recently:
Sweeping ocean views, gentle sea breezes, the historic Tybee Lighthouse, and ships cruising majestically through the channel all make for an enchanting background. Strolling on the beach promises dolphins, starfish, sand dollars and the occasional mermaid sighting!
Generous goodies include evening wine and cheese reception, homemade cookies with milk at bedtime, champagne for your suite, unlimited access to bottled water, soft drinks, coffee and a selection of teas. Our famous gourmet breakfasts include: French Toast Bananas Foster, Mariner’s Omelet, Crab Cake Eggs Benedict or delicious Strawberry Pancakes.
A complete DVD library of recent movies, along with many great classics is available for your use, should you decide to cuddle up in your room. The suites are beautifully appointed and offer soaking tubs for two. Each room has something unique, such as a traditional Chinese Wedding bed, magic window to view the sea, 2 Grand Honeymoon Suites for ultra-privacy, an antique fainting couch, etc.
Special arrangements will be made for our travel writer/photographer guests. Savannah Beach Inn would like to extend the following amenities:
- Sunset Dolphin Cruise with Picnic Basket of Treats and Champagne
- Tickets for 2 to Historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum
- Exclusive Tour around the Island in a 1960 Convertible Cadillac
- Dinner for 2 at one of Tybee’s Four Star Restaurants
- Gourmet Breakfast for 2 on the Inn’s Glorious Wrap-Around Porch
Or how about this one:
I would like to extend an invitation for two persons to attend our lovely “Christmas Lights Night” on Friday 21st November.
The invitation would include accommodation in our newly refurbished B&B situated in the medieval village of Warkworth Northumberland.
The night itself is very festive, with the turning on event at approx. 6pm, followed by an evening of village festive cheer, late night shops and galleries.
Or this one:
…participants will have the opportunity to experience for themselves the nature of the Riviera Maya and its multiple adventurous activities. Journalists will snorkel, swim with dolphins, will have opportunities to dive, will take a boat tour in Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, experience evening ziplining, will be able to horseback ride and much more. all this surrounded by the magnificent jungle, crystal clear Caribbean sea, white sand beaches and cenotes, natural sink holes. (In this one, the trip included airfare!)
As you can see…becoming a travel writer has many advantages - and is one of the quickest ways to add taking exotic vacations to wonderful locations around the world - to your lifestyle writing business - and you don’t have to wait until you’re a millionaire or famous writer to get started!
